Youth Worship Snapshot (4/15/12)

So What?

Mostly we can grasp the cross, the price paid, the mercy, the grace shown…. But I fear that we celebrate an empty tomb and stop there?

What is resurrection, what implications does that have on our lives both collectively and personally?

Question 1 – why was Jesus raised?

Question 2 – what does that mean for us?

Question 3 – what does that mean for you?

This all sounds good in theory, but what does it look like in practice?

In small groups I want you to seriously consider “Does the resurrection and the availability of it to us have any implication to me personally and us collectively?”

Just accepting the sacrificial love offered through the cross and not moving into a better understanding and practice of resurrection is like buying a car and never driving it…. It makes no sense…

Series: Moredinary

Theme: Moving from Knowledge to Action

Scripture Emphasis: Luke 8:42b-48

Message in a nutshell: Empathizing with the bleeding woman (outcast, lonely, desperate and apathetic) but realizing that something motivated her to reach out and enter a space in which she was not welcomed. What motivated her? Knowledge of the messiah and hope of healing. We so often let our knowledge and hope insulate us rather than motivate us. Our knowledge becomes a negative comfort holding us back from action.

Theme: Moredinary
Focus: moving from ‘we’ to ‘us’
Scripture Passage: Luke 8:1-15 The Parable of the Sower
Message Highlights: In this passage the gift (the seed) never changes or waivers. What changes is the receiver of the seed. We have to examine how we receive God’s desires for us. After an exposition of relating the different types of soil students were asked 2 simple questions as they went into small group discussion. The first, ‘Do you personally want to become the person God has designed you to be?’ The second, “Do we as a community want to be engaged in God’s Kingdom as a group, committed to one another?’
Small Group discussion happened after the message.

Theme: Moredinary

Focus: Judging is inherent and ordinary and we are called to much more

Scriptures used: 1 Corinthians 13:1-8

Message in a nutshell: Too often we compromise Love. We strangle it out by missing its nature. The love of the father shown through Christ does not insist on it’s own way (but we do), it endures (we give up) but there is hope. Our hope comes from allowing this perfect Love to transform us into the image of Christ. “Jesus was only intolerant of the people who were intolerant to others.”

Music: Our God - Chris Tomlin, From the Inside Out - Hillsong United, Your Love Never Fails - Jesus Culture

Worship & Lesson Snapshot 1/15/12
Small Group goals: To re-connect after a month break from meetings. Continue to cultivate and establish relationships with one another. Introduce the theme and topics of the evening for discussion
Message in a nutshell: We must identify the main factors that keep us from allowing God to make more of us, to give our ordinary to him so that we may do something and live into something extroidinary. Two key barriers are Fear & Pride. Students were challenged to resonate with their own fears and pride and to name it so that we together can do the hard work of releasing that.
Scriptures used: Rich Young Ruler (Mark 10) The Fall (Genesis 3)
Music: One Thing Remains - Jesus Culture, Everyday - Hillsong United, Everything - Lifehouse
Attendance: 29 students, 10 adult volunteers
Fun elements: mixer/get to know you guessing game to begin was lots of fun and our students know each other much better than they let on!

New things are emerging….

With the new year, we who are entrusted to lead the Ministry to Youth and Families at Main Street are excited to share how we plan to meet the task of building youth disciples for the transformation of the world.

 Sunday Evenings

Beginning Sunday January 15th we will launch a new program (official name to be decided later) that will encompass both our goals of small groups (intentional relationships with God and others) and the efforts of Youth Worship (fellowship, community-building, corporate worship and biblical teaching and instruction).

This program promises to be alot of fun as well as spiritually formative. This endeavor will become the apex of our weekly youth ministry as it will take much preparation, servant leaders and youth energy to be successful.

Our worship band, led by Keenan Dollar will continue to lead us in music and our small group leaders will continue to serve our students as they have since September.

The Sunday Evening Schedule will be as follows;

4:30 - Band rehearsal (led by Keenan, any and all interested youth musicians welcomed)

5:00 - Team meeting (Youth Ministry staff and Adult Servant Leaders/Small Group leaders)

5:30 - Students arrive (bring your own meal if you wish) fellowship, hang-out time

6:00 - Program begins (community-building activities, announcements, small group mtgs., worship and teaching time)

7:30 - dismissal

Wednesday Evenings ‘Next Steps’

The Wednesday evening paradigm will shift to become solely discipleship-focused. It is our hope that Wednesday offerings be intentionally focused in order to give our students options to grow deeper and experience those things that lead us into a life of discipleship. A life that not only believes but follows.

This will happen in several ways. Each week there will be ‘Bible-Track’ which will be led by Mr. Rick Preusch or Youth Ministry Staff. This will be a foundational bible study that will focus on the biblical narrative from an applicable viewpoint. Periodically (once or twice a month) Youth Interns will lead ‘Action-Track’ for a limited number of students. Action-Track will be a very hands-on lesson that has impact on our faith community or mission partners such as Aldersgate, SIFAT etc… We will also have periodic topical offerings to supplement the Bible-Track.

‘Next-Steps’ will meet from 6 to 7 p.m. immediately after the Church-wide meal which resume the 18th from 5 to 6 p.m.

Confirmation Journey

Our 2012 Confirmation classes will meet from 6 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday evenings in addition to two retreats and a service/mission experience. Complete brochure can be found here
